Sweet Somethings is a super-short film about my moderate hearing loss—something I was born with, and something I’ve spent 27 years hiding and denying.
In the summer of 2021, I received a pair of hearing aids that suddenly allowed me to hear new sounds like whispering, the hum of a fridge, my cat’s purr, and even my own breath. With these new sounds, however, came the reminder of what I had been missing. My bittersweet feelings inspired this video essay, made in collaboration with The New York Times, which explores my journey toward embracing hearing loss as a part of myself.
Sweet Somethings was born of my poetry. It’s my love letter to, and my heartbreak over, sweet little sounds. It won’t answer all of your questions. It’s not supposed to.
This film was published by the New York Times instagram in collaboration with the Opinion section in May 2022.
I am selling a limited run of film stills as 8x10 prints here.
